Although February is almost over, there is always time to celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month! At Stadium Dental and Orthodontics, we want our patients of all ages to understand the importance of good oral hygiene. In today’s blog, your Rancho Cucamonga, CA, dentist will share some ways that you can help your child practice good dental hygiene habits at home, and how we can help maintain your child’s dental health in our office.
Your Child Follows Your Example
When you teach your child good habits at home, they will continue to keep those habits throughout their lifetime. However, children learn best by following the example of those they admire. If you are not being diligent about maintaining your dental health at home, your child will let theirs fall to the wayside as well. So, it is important to always model good habits for your child, such as:
- Storing your toothbrush upright so that it can dry all the way through, preventing it from harboring bacteria
- Brushing your teeth for two full minutes twice a day using a toothpaste that contains fluoride
- Being sure to brush the hard to reach parts of your smile, as well as the backs of your teeth
- Flossing your teeth thoroughly every day
Following these steps will help improve your dental health and help your child understand the importance of a great oral healthcare routine.
Office Visits Are Also Important
No matter how diligent you are about your dental health routine at home, the American Dental Association recommends that everyone make and attend routine dental checkups at least every six months, starting as early as three years old. To help your child get used to attending these visits, and to do away with the negative stigma associated with the dentist’s office, we recommend watching videos or reading books about the dentist with your child, as well as bringing them with you to your appointments. When they see how brave you are at the dentist, they will want to be brave, too.
What Happens at a Checkup
When you bring your child into our office for a checkup, the friendly staff at Stadium Dental and Orthodontics will first conduct an examination of your child’s smile to check for cavities and to make sure that their smile and jaw are developing properly. If we find any decay or cavities, we may recommend a dental filling. If we find that your child has spots that may be at risk for cavities due to deep grooves in hard to reach places such as the back molars, we may recommend a preventative treatment such as a dental sealant to seal over the grooves, helping to keep your child’s teeth safe from cavities and decay. We will also conduct a professional cleaning, helping them maintain their overall dental health by removing plaque and tartar.
